Staying Soft in the Potter's Hands: A Lesson in Humility and Yielding
Hi Friend,
There's a truth hidden in one of the most controversial passages of Scripture—one that has caused countless believers to wrestle with the character of God. When we read about the Lord hardening Pharaoh's heart, we often stumble over the implications.
But what if I told you that this story holds a beautiful, life-changing lesson about remaining pliable in the hands of our Creator?
The Clay That HardensBut indeed, O man, who are you to reply against God? Will the thing formed say to him who formed it, 'Why have you made me like this?' Does not the potter have power over the clay, from the same lump to make one vessel for honor and another for dishonor? What if God, wanting to show His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath prepared for destruction...
Romans 9:20-22And Pharaoh’s heart grew hard, and he did not heed them, as the Lord had said. So the Lord said to Moses: “Pharaoh’s heart is hard; he refuses to let the people go.
Exodus 7:13-14Think about clay for a moment. In the potter's hands, it's soft, responsive, and full of possibility. But leave it untouched, and something remarkable happens—it hardens. It resists. It becomes brittle and unusable. When God speaks of hardening Pharaoh's heart, He's not just describing a act of condemnation. He's describing the natural consequence of a heart that has stopped yielding.
The window of opportunity had passed. The clay was no longer moldable. God's hand moisture—His dew, His flowing waters, His persistent working—would no longer flow in that direction because the clay had chosen to remain stagnant.
Pharaoh's heart had dried out, not because God forced it to, but because he had resisted the Potter's touch for so long that flexibility was no longer possible.
The Call to Stay SoftBeloved, this is where you and I come in. We are called to be humble and meek in the Potter's hands. We're called to stay soft, yielded, and responsive to His touch—no matter how uncomfortable the shaping process might feel.
He who follows righteousness and mercy finds life, righteousness, and honor.
Proverbs 21:21But now, O Lord, You are our Father; we are the clay, and You our potter; and all we are the work of Your hand.
Isaiah 64:8We are His workmanship, continually being shaped and refined. The Potter doesn't abandon His clay—He lovingly works with it, smoothing rough edges and creating something beautiful from what might seem ordinary. We are all being molded into vessels for His glory!
Here's the beautiful mystery: we don't know how long our season of life, ministry, and activity of serving will last. Sometimes we aren’t given the full picture until it is said and done. How God chooses to showcase His glory in our life, to make His power known requires patience and trust in His sovereignty.
Pharaoh reigned for years, yet his legacy became a cautionary tale. Jesus ministered for only three years, yet His impact echoes through eternity. There are one-hit-wonder bands whose songs never made it past the first single, and there are quiet servants whose names we'll never know but whose faithfulness changed generations.
Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Matthew 11:29The length of our calling doesn't determine our legacy—our humility does.
Humility: The Secret to LegacyWhen we remain humble, we stay yielded. When we stay yielded, we remain soft in the Potter's hands. And when we remain soft, God can continue to shape us, mold us, and use us for His glory—regardless of whether our "ministry" lasts three years or thirty.
But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: 'God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.
James 4:6Humility isn't thinking less of yourself; it's thinking of yourself less. It's understanding that you are clay—precious, chosen, beloved clay—but clay nonetheless. It's recognizing that the beauty isn't in what you accomplish but in how yielded you remain to the One who is shaping you.
The moisture of God's presence, the dew of His Spirit, the flowing waters of His grace—these are available to us every single day. But only if we choose to stay soft. Only if we refuse to let our hearts harden with pride, bitterness, or resistance.
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Psalm 51:10This is our daily prayer—asking God to keep our hearts tender, our spirits steadfast, and our lives yielded to His perfect will.
An Invitation to YieldToday, I want to encourage you: don't let your clay harden. Don't let the window of opportunity pass while you remain stagnant. Whether God is calling you to something that will last three years or thirty, whether your impact will be known by millions or felt by one—stay humble. Stay yielded. Stay soft in His hands.
Because legacy isn't about length. It's about humility. It's about remaining moldable, no matter what season you're in.
Stay soft, beloved. The Potter is still working.
Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time.
